Save St Mary's
Since the 1940’s generations of families have benefited from the midwife led care and support available at St Mary’s Birth Centre in Melton Mowbray.
Despite a highly valued reputation, a decision to pause services for a period of six months, has been made by University Hospitals Trust of Leicester NHS Trust.
Both birthing and postnatal care will no longer be available, mums will need to travel to city hospitals, and
town and surrounding area will be left without a key public service.
Founded by local mums, the “Save St. Mary’s Birth
Centre” campaign group has been advocating to keep services within the community for 16 years.
These are the stories of four mums who have
been supported by St Mary’s.
On March 19th 2026, the decision was taken by the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board that St Mary's Birth Centre would close and relocate services to the midwife led unit at Leicester General Hospital.
